The European Movement in Serbia strongly condemns the atmosphere of violence, arbitrariness, and lawlessness spreading and deepening within Serbian society. This situation is a direct consequence of the completely inappropriate and inadequate responses of the Serbian authorities to the tragedy in Novi Sad and the prolonged protests of students and citizens demanding basic justice, the rule of law, and accountability for corruption.
The latest unfortunate incident in Belgrade – where a car drove into protesters, resulting in severe injuries to a female student – highlights the additional responsibility of public authorities to ensure full safety and the freedom of assembly and protest as fundamental human rights, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia and international conventions.
In this context, the European Movement especially welcomes the support expressed in recent days by some European institutions and organizations, including representatives of the European Parliament, the European Economic and Social Committee, and the International European Movement from Brussels. In their statements, these organizations have expressed solidarity with the students and strongly supported their demands for justice, accountability, and the proper functioning of state institutions.
The youth of Serbia are at the heart of the country’s democratic future! Their fundamental rights must be protected, their voices must be heard, and their safety must be fully guaranteed.
